Aerosmith recently made the difficult announcement that they are retiring after more than five decades of performing, due to the ongoing vocal issues of frontman Steven Tyler.

This news, shared on the band’s website and X account (formerly Twitter), highlights the little-known condition that Tyler is battling, which has ultimately led to this “heartbreaking” decision.

The band expressed their sadness in the statement, emphasizing the uniqueness of Tyler’s voice and its significance to their music:

“As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other.”

Tyler’s vocal challenges have persisted, making it impossible for him to continue performing, thus prompting the band’s retirement from live performances.

“He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side.”

“Sadly, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage.”

Before Aerosmith decided to cancel their tour and announce their retirement, the band had already postponed several dates of their “Peace Out” farewell tour. This came after Steven Tyler damaged his vocal cords during a performance on September 10, according to reports.

The injury to Tyler’s vocal cords necessitated a period of rest and recovery, which initially led to the rescheduling of shows.

However, as his vocal issues persisted, the band ultimately made the difficult decision to retire from performing altogether.

“I’m heartbroken to say I have received strict doctor’s orders not to sing for the next 30 days,” Tyler, 75, posted on Instagram.

“I sustained vocal cord damage during Saturday’s show that led to subsequent bleeding. We’ll need to postpone a few dates so that we can come back and give you the performance you deserve.”

In late September, Aerosmith updated fans on Steven Tyler’s condition via a Facebook post, revealing that his vocal cord injury was “more serious than initially thought.”

This acknowledgment highlighted the severity of Tyler’s situation and contributed to the band’s eventual decision to cancel their “Peace Out” farewell tour and announce their retirement from live performances.

The worsening of Tyler’s injury underscored the difficulty in continuing the tour, leading to the heartbreaking decision to end their five-decade-long career on the stage.

“His doctor has confirmed that in addition to the damage to his vocal cords, he fractured his larynx, which requires ongoing care.”
