MF Doom’s wife, Jasmine Dumile, has recently disclosed that the rapper’s cause of death was from complications related to his pre-existing conditions.
She revealed that he had been battling health issues, including high blood pressure and diabetes, which contributed to his untimely passing on October 31, 2020.
The inquest revealed that MF Doom’s condition rapidly worsened while he was hospitalized.
Jasmine Dumile explained that despite his overall good health, Doom had been dealing with kidney disease, high blood pressure, and associated weight gain and anxiety.
After being prescribed ACE inhibitors for his blood pressure, he experienced severe breathing problems and swelling in his tongue and throat, leading to his emergency room visit.
Jasmine Dumile recounted using a second phone to directly notify the hospital staff after Doom called her in distress.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Jasmine Dumile couldn’t visit MF Doom in the hospital until October 31, when the respirator was turned off.
The inquest found that Doom had complained about difficulty breathing on October 21, collapsed, and suffered respiratory arrest.
Jasmine’s legal team has questioned the frequency of medical checks and a reported two-hour delay in administering medication for his throat swelling.
Despite his condition being closely monitored and some signs of improvement, including elevated oxygen levels and communication with doctors, these concerns were raised during the inquest.
Doctors noted that the swelling of MF Doom’s tongue, throat, and lips was a rare side effect of the ACE inhibitors, leading to a condition called angioedema.
Following his death, St. James Hospital conducted a serious incident investigation to assess the case and identify lessons learned.
The inquiry into Doom’s death is still ongoing, as the investigation continues to explore the circumstances surrounding his medical treatment.
In a post announcing his death in Dec. 2020, Jasmine wrote,
“To Dumile, The greatest husband, father, teacher, student, business partner, lover and friend I could ever ask for. Thank you for all the things you have shown, taught and given to me, our children and our family.
Thank you for teaching me how to forgive beings and give another chance, not to be so quick to judge and write off.
Thank you for showing how not to be afraid to love and be the best person I could ever be. My world will never be the same without you.”
MF Doom, born Daniel Dumile, began his career as Zev Love X in the rap trio K.M.D. with his brother DJ Subroc.
After his brother’s death in 1993, Dumile took a break before re-emerging in 1997 as MF Doom, donning a metallic mask inspired by the Fantastic Four villain. His new persona marked a distinctive and influential chapter in his career.
