Voice actor Atsuko Tanaka has passed away at 61 after battling an undisclosed illness for the past year. Her notable work includes voicing Major Motoko Kusanagi in “Ghost in the Shell.”
“Including her year-long battle with illness, I think she lived a life that was typical of Tanaka,” he wrote in a translated obituary.
“Serious, dignified, and a little playful. I am truly happy to have such a proud mother.”
Atsuko Tanaka, born November 14, 1962, was a renowned voice actress best known for voicing Major Motoko Kusanagi in the “Ghost in the Shell” series.
Her extensive anime work included roles in “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure,” “Lupin III,” and “Queen’s Blade.”
In games, she voiced Bayonetta in the series of the same name, as well as characters in “Nier,” “Yakuza,” and “Devil May Cry,” and provided the Japanese voice for Lara Croft in several “Tomb Raider” titles.
Following her passing, franchises she was associated with, including “Ghost in the Shell,” paid tribute to her impactful performances.
“I had a great time playing the role of Kaine in Nier Replicant,” reads Nier’s Twitter account. “We sincerely pray for the repose of your soul.”
