Springboks captain Siya Kolisi and his wife Rachel have announced their divorce on social media, stating that the decision followed “much reflection and open conversations.”
The couple was married for eight years and has two children together, in addition to being guardians to Kolisi’s younger siblings.
In a joint statement on Instagram, Siya and Rachel said:
“We have mutually decided to end our marriage. This decision comes from a place of love, respect and understanding that this is the best path forward for both of us. While our relationship as a couple is changing, we remain great friends and committed partners in raising our children with the same love and care they’ve always known.”
“We will also continue working together on the Foundation that means so much to us. We are grateful for the love, understanding and support you’ve shown us and we kindly ask for your respect as we navigate this transition,” the message further read.
Siya Kolisi is notable for being the first Black captain of the Springboks national rugby team.
He led the team to victory in back-to-back Rugby World Cups, achieving historic wins in 2019 and 2023. Kolisi’s leadership has had a significant impact on South African rugby and has inspired many, reflecting the changing landscape of the sport in the country.
