Victoria Monét and John Gaines have ended their relationship.
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter behind “On My Mama,” 35, and fitness trainer John Gaines shared a joint statement on social media on Sept. 23, revealing that they decided to part ways romantically 10 months ago. The couple shares a 3½-year-old daughter named Hazel.
In their statement, the pair explained that they had initially been “avoiding a formal statement” regarding their split.
However, they felt compelled to address the situation after facing “questions” about their relationship and encountering “extremely false accusations” concerning the beginnings of their romance.
Before making the announcement, Monét and Gaines said they “thought long and hard about whether we owed it to anyone to explain where we are as we heal.”
They acknowledged how social media can both amplify truths and spread misinformation. Ultimately, they decided to be open and provide clarity in the hope of putting an end to speculation, allowing them to focus on healing.
The couple went on to share that they had spent the past 10 months “trying to respectfully and privately go through” their breakup.
Despite their decision to part ways, they emphasized that they “still completely adore and respect each other” but are “no longer a couple.” They reassured their fans that their split was amicable, with “no infidelity, toxic behavior, or drama” involved.
In the statement, Monét and Gaines explained that they both have “fundamental growing to do,” and believe that personal growth would be best achieved apart.
This decision, they said, is intended to help them continue being the best versions of themselves for their daughter.
They stressed that “it simply didn’t work out, and that’s OK,” adding that they still think highly of each other and approach every interaction with love for the sake of their family.
Their daughter Hazel, whom they described as “incredible,” remains their “number 1 priority forever.” The couple affirmed that their relationship status does not change this fact and that they are committed to doing the necessary inner work as co-parents. They expressed confidence that, with time, God will place them both where they need to be.
Monét and Gaines also took a moment to acknowledge “all of our supporters, friends, and family,” thanking them for their “love, care, and concern.”
They requested privacy and space to maintain a safe and happy environment for Hazel as they continue to co-parent.
The couple reiterated their commitment to being a family, despite the public change in their relationship status, asking for understanding when they are seen together with Hazel.
In closing, they expressed their appreciation for everyone who listened to their statement and asked to be kept in well-intentioned prayers.
Monét and Gaines had kept much of their relationship private before announcing in December 2020 that they were expecting their first child.
Earlier this year, they walked the red carpet at the 2024 Grammys with Hazel, who made history as the youngest Grammy nominee in December 2023 when Monét’s song “Hollywood” was nominated for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
Reflecting on Hazel’s accomplishment, Monét shared in February that her daughter “understands she’s done something really cool, but I don’t think she understands the magnitude.”
