Jake Sullivan was born into a family that valued education and public service. His father, Dan Sullivan, was a professor at the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication and also contributed to the Star Tribune.
His mother, Jean Sullivan, worked as a high school guidance counselor. Growing up in Burlington, Vermont, Jake excelled academically and was involved in various extracurricular activities.
He attended Southwest High School in Minneapolis, where he distinguished himself as a Coca-Cola Scholar, debate champion, and student council president, graduating in 1994.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Sullivan was a chief foreign policy advisor to Hillary Clinton.
Following this role, he joined the administration of President Barack Obama, where he served as Deputy National Security Advisor.
