Yes, River Phoenix was indeed one of the most sought-after young actors in Hollywood during the early ’90s. Known for his intense performances and charisma, he gained acclaim for roles in films such as Stand by Me (1986), My Own Private Idaho (1991), and Running on Empty (1988).

His promising career was tragically cut short when he died in 1993 at the age of 23.

River Phoenix’s death was indeed ruled a drug overdose by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

He collapsed outside The Viper Room, a nightclub in West Hollywood, on October 31, 1993, and was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center shortly thereafter. His passing was a significant loss to the film industry and his fans.

The toxicology report revealed that River Phoenix had “lethal levels of cocaine and morphine” in his system.

Scott Carrier from the coroner’s office clarified that the morphine was likely derived from heroin, as heroin metabolizes into morphine in the body.

The report also showed the presence of lower levels of Valium, marijuana, and ephedrine. This combination of substances contributed to the tragic outcome of his overdose.

“I was told that the cocaine and morphine [levels] were both high enough that either would have been lethal by itself,” Carrier told.

There was considerable debate among River Phoenix’s family and friends about the role of drugs in his death.

Actress Christine Lahti, who worked with Phoenix on Running on Empty, expressed disbelief, highlighting his strong commitment to a clean and healthy lifestyle.

This sentiment was shared by many who knew him well, adding a layer of complexity and emotional conflict to the public understanding of his death.

River Phoenix spent his final night at The Viper Room, a nightclub on the Sunset Strip that was co-owned by Johnny Depp at the time.

He collapsed outside the club, and despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center later that night.

The nightclub and its association with Depp became widely known in connection with Phoenix’s tragic death.
