Lisa Marie Presley passed away in January 2023 due to complications from a small bowel obstruction caused by scar tissue from previous bariatric surgery, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office.
On January 12, she reported severe abdominal pain and was later found unresponsive at her Calabasas home by her ex-husband.
Lisa Marie Presley, 54, was transported to a hospital after experiencing severe abdominal pain and went into cardiac arrest, leading to her death that afternoon.
The autopsy report noted that while she had a history of drug use, she had been sober for several years. Health issues arose following her bariatric surgery, which is known to have long-term complications.
Although she was prescribed opiates after the surgery and subsequent infection, she had been transitioned to other medications to avoid opiates.
The autopsy report indicated that Lisa Marie Presley had a history of overmedicating, often forgetting she had already taken her medications.
Toxicology results revealed therapeutic levels of oxycodone in her system, but buprenorphine, used for treating opioid addiction, was present but not a factor in her death.
Despite experiencing symptoms like abdominal pain, fevers, vomiting, and nausea for months, she did not seek medical attention.
Initially, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office deferred ruling on her case while waiting for additional test results, including a toxicology report, before finalizing the cause of death.
Two days before her death, Lisa Marie Presley attended the Golden Globe Awards, where the biopic “Elvis,” about her father’s life, was nominated. Some viewers expressed concern about her unsteady appearance in red carpet interviews.
She was later buried at Graceland, with a memorial service held in late January.
Following her death, Priscilla Presley challenged the validity of documents that appointed Lisa Marie’s daughter, Riley Keough, as the sole trustee of Elvis’s estate.
In June, Riley Keough agreed to a settlement with her grandmother, Priscilla Presley, resolving the dispute over control of the family trust with a lump-sum payment reportedly around $1 million.
Although the Elvis brand generates over $100 million annually, the family trust receives only a fraction of this.
Recently, Keough was nominated for an Emmy for Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for her role in “Daisy Jones & the Six,” an Amazon mini-series about a fictional 1970s band.
