Ali Wong’s new comedy special, Single Lady, showcases her candid reflections on life after divorce, highlighting both the challenges and humorous moments that come with it.
She emphasizes her enduring friendship with her ex-husband, Justin Hakuta, calling him her “best friend” despite their separation.
Wong’s comedic take on navigating post-divorce life resonates with many, as she blends personal anecdotes with her trademark humor to explore themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery.
“I didn’t expect the news of my divorce to be so widespread and public,” the Always Be My Maybe star said about announcing the news of her marriage ending.
“I felt really embarrassed and ashamed, but I didn’t realize that all of these media outlets were acting like a bat signal letting all potentially interested men know. I’ve never been pursued this much in my life.”
Ali Wong met her husband, Justin Hakuta, in 2010 at a wedding reception while he was attending Harvard. They dated for a couple of years before tying the knot on November 27, 2014, in San Francisco.
The couple welcomed two daughters: Mari in 2015 and Nikki in 2017, the latter of whom Wong was pregnant with during her Netflix special Baby Cobra. In a significant career shift, Justin left his job as a tech executive to become Ali’s tour manager, supporting her comedic journey and performances.
Their relationship has been characterized by mutual support and collaboration, even as they navigate the complexities of co-parenting post-divorce.
In their divorce filing, Ali Wong and Justin Hakuta cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split.
A source informed that the situation is amicable, and they plan to continue co-parenting their daughters lovingly. Although they separated in 2022, Wong officially filed for divorce in December 2023.
Their focus remains on maintaining a positive relationship for the sake of their children, emphasizing a commitment to co-parenting despite their marital separation.
She said in her standup special,
“If you’re romantically involved with somebody and then all of the sudden that somebody reveals a personality trait that you don’t like, you could just leave, move to another city and never see their stupid face again. Because you didn’t make a promise in front of your grandma and all of your co-workers, and ask your friends to buy you an Instant Pot. You didn’t fuse your DNA to create human life that will forever ask you, ‘Where’s Daddy?’”
Though Ali Wong and Justin Hakuta have ended their romantic relationship, they remain actively involved in each other’s lives on a platonic level.
Their commitment to maintaining a supportive friendship reflects their mutual respect and dedication to co-parenting their daughters, ensuring a stable environment for their family despite the changes in their relationship.
This continued connection showcases their ability to navigate post-divorce life while prioritizing their children’s well-being.
“We’re really, really close; we’re best friends. We’ve been through so much together. It’s a very unconventional divorce, the comedian told.
Justin still serves as her touring manager and they travel together with their daughters who they co-parent. She still runs by jokes for him and she told,
“He still to this day has ultimate veto power, because my relationship with him even post-divorce is more important than a two-minute bit.”
