Nicolas Cage’s eldest son, Weston Cage Coppola, responded to allegations made by his mother, Christina Fulton, claiming he needs “help” after allegedly assaulting her.
“She needs help,” Cage Coppola, 33, remarked when approached outside a Los Angeles courthouse on Wednesday, July 31, referring to his mother, 57.
Earlier that day, Cage Coppola pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault with a deadly weapon, stemming from an incident in April when Fulton accused him of attacking her during a mental breakdown.
When Cage Coppola was asked outside the courthouse if he had “reconciled” with his mother, he remained silent. The outlet also spoke with Fulton after her court appearance.
“I hope he gets the help he needs,” Fulton stated, adding that she couldn’t comment further on their relationship.
Us Weekly confirmed on July 10 that Cage Coppola, the only son of Cage, 60, and Fulton, was taken into custody by the LAPD Fugitives Department for the incident that occurred in April.
“On April 28th, 2024, around 5:30 p.m., I received urgent messages from friends of my son, Weston Cage, regarding his deteriorating mental state, urging me to come help,” she explained. “When I arrived to offer support and console him, he was already in the midst of a manic rage.”
Fulton recounted how her son’s demeanor changed “within minutes” of her arrival, at which point he allegedly attacked her. “I was brutally assaulted and sustained serious injuries,” she recalled.
Despite the alleged assault, we reviewed photos showing Fulton’s swollen jaw and facial bruising, Fulton said she tried to prevent her son from being jailed.
She claimed that despite her pleas for the police to detain him for a mental health evaluation, the officers refused and did not provide her with medical attention, nor was an ambulance called.
Fulton’s lawyer, Allen Sepanyan, also told Us that medical aid was not provided at the scene.
Fulton concluded by expressing her concern for her son’s well-being, stating, “As a mother, I am deeply saddened and concerned about Weston’s ongoing mental health crisis. It is imperative that he receives the help he desperately needs.”
In response, Cage Coppola told Us in an exclusive statement on July 11, “There is no help I desperately need. There is a lot of inaccurate information printed.”
Following his arrest, Cage Coppola was released on $150,000 bail. Along with his not-guilty plea, a judge issued a protective order for Fulton. Cage Coppola is scheduled to return to court in September.
Nicolas Cage has not publicly commented on his son’s legal issues. Cage and Fulton welcomed Cage Coppola in December 1990 but separated soon after.
Cage later had a son, Kal-El, with his third wife, Alice Kim, from whom he divorced in 2016. He married Riko Shibata in February 2021, and the couple welcomed their daughter August in 2022.
