James Earl “Boobie” Miles Jr., known from Friday Night Lights, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after an Ector County jury found him guilty of Failure to Comply With Sex Offender Registration Requirements.
This follows a previous five-year sentence he received in 2020 for aggravated sexual assault related to a 1999 incident.
As part of his plea agreement, he was required to register as a sex offender upon his release in 2022, but authorities reported that he failed to fulfill this obligation.
James Earl “Boobie” Miles Jr. is currently awaiting trial on two family violence charges stemming from a March 1, 2023, incident.
According to an Odessa Police Department report, officers were dispatched to a home on Dobbs following a 911 call from a woman who reported that her ex-husband was choking her.
The call was disconnected, prompting dispatch operators to urge officers to respond quickly.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a running car parked in the roadway, with a woman later identified as Miles’ ex-wife found slumped in the driver’s seat.
Her head was resting in the passenger’s seat, and investigators were unsure if she was alive, as multiple attempts to get a response through knocking on the window went unanswered.
Before medics arrived, the woman regained consciousness and was able to unlock the car door. Officers noted that she had redness on her neck and bleeding cuts on her hands. She was experiencing “great difficulty” speaking and breathing and expressed concern that her neck might be broken.
Before being transported to the emergency room, the victim informed officers that she had been choked by Miles, her ex-husband, and indicated that he was still inside his home at the time.
A records check revealed Miles had 16 prior arrests, including offenses like Aggravated Sexual Assault and violation of a protective order aimed at keeping him away from the victim.
When police approached his home, Miles refused to cooperate, but he was ultimately taken into custody with the help of K-9 officers.
A search of his residence revealed over 7 ounces of marijuana, which was packaged for distribution, along with a gun cleaning kit and bullets. Miles claimed he used the marijuana legally for knee pain.
At the hospital, the victim told officers that she had been trying to reconcile with Miles when he asked her to leave his home.
During the encounter, she stated that Miles threw her onto the bed and began choking her, almost to the point of losing consciousness. She also mentioned that she started to lose her vision during the assault.
Miles reportedly told the victim she was “faking it” and then struck her on the side of the face while pushing her out of his home as she “prayed” for help.
After exiting the house, she felt “wobbly” and recalled starting her vehicle before becoming dizzy, hitting the curb, and passing out.
As a result of the March 2023 incident, Miles was arrested and charged with Assault by Impeding Breath and Failure to Comply With a Protective Order.
Miles, a former running back at Permian High School, was a central figure in the book Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team, and a Dream by H.G. Bissinger. Despite being recruited by numerous top college football programs, his athletic career was cut short due to a knee injury.
