Mandy Teefey, Selena Gomez’s mother, discovered Christina Grimmie’s music on YouTube before Grimmie’s rise to fame on “The Voice” in 2014.

Teefey was particularly impressed by Grimmie’s cover of Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.”

What Happened To Christina Gimmie?

Christina Grimmie, a third-place finalist on The Voice season 6 in 2014, was discovered on YouTube by Mandy Teefey, Selena Gomez’s mother.

She became close friends with Gomez, opened for her on the We Own the Night tour in 2011, and was managed by Mandy’s husband, Brian Teefey.

Grimmie spoke highly of Gomez, appreciating the chance to learn from her.

She added,

“I can’t explain it — she was in my place at one point, but what I’ve learned from her is just to keep going.”

On June 10, 2016, Christina Grimmie was signing autographs with the band Before You Exit at the Plaza Live venue in Orlando when an unidentified man shot her.

At the time, Selena Gomez was in Florida for the Miami leg of her Revival tour. During the concert, Gomez paid tribute to Grimmie, breaking down in tears as she performed “Nobody.”

She paused to speak about her deep friendship with Grimmie, visibly emotional throughout the tribute.

When she was 14, we met her. My parents and I signed her.”

The Rare Beauty founder spoke about Grimmie’s faith and reported,

“One thing about Christina and her family is that she holds her faith so closely to her. It’s not about a religion and it’s not about good deeds. It’s just that she had faith.”

During the concert, Selena Gomez dedicated her piano rendition of “Transfiguration” as a tribute to Christina Grimmie.

Before the performance, Gomez also honored Grimmie by sharing a photo of them together on X.

Selena Gomez’s stepfather raised over $100,000 for Christina Grimmie’s family within three days after her death. Despite initially connecting through YouTube, Gomez and Grimmie quickly became close friends.

Christina Grimmie was considered part of Gomez’s family, and their bond grew strong through their performances and shared experiences, making them lifelong friends.
